IRCTC is the only official website that enables you to book Indian railways tickets online. This website is maintained by Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited.
The best way to visit the irctc website is to type the following address in your internet browser's address bar:
www.irctc.co.in. For reference look at the following image to see where is address bar and what to write there:
The top space with green text and a lock is the address bar. Type the website name there.

A grab from the irctc login page official website old interface.

When the IRCTC login page opens it gives you an option to login. If you are a new visitor you should create your account first. Instruction to create a new account can be found on the official irctc website itself. Please make sure that all the details that you put in are correct. If you make a fake account irctc can disapprove your account at a later stage without any warning and can file a case against you for false impersonation.
The best thing about the irctc website is that it accepts all major Indian banks debit/credit cards and the payment is also possible via internet banking. I am using the website for the past 10 years and so far I have got no problems except few errors and payment failures. In case your payment is done i.e. amount from bank account is debited but ticket not booked then you need not worry. The system automatically reverses the payment and you get your money back within a week. So if your money is deducted and you didn't get your money back to your account you don't need to worry. Just for few days or about two weeks and even after you have not got your irctc login money back do try to contact irctc customer care.

If you are looking for all the services that irctc official site provides than you can follow this link IRCTC Services.
Update: A great news for the irctc login registration users is that it is working on a brand new more user-friendly website which has been launched through the last week of April 2014. This new site is more robust, fast and gives less errors than the previous one. But as you can see irctc people are more concerned in revenue generation than hassle free user experience that's why the login username and password is in the middle of the page and you to look for it very carefully. For your covenience I have put here a screen shot of the login page.

IRCTC is now improving and has shed some ads to let you login fast by opening their homepage fast but most people think that this will not help in making the website fast as well because number of users are increasing exponentially. As per the railway budget 2013 it was able to handle 120,000 users at any given time.

IRCTC Ticket Booking - Tips and Tricks

Of late many stories and articles have been published in the media about the misuse of tatkal scheme by touts and travel agents. This to my knowledge is very much true.
Yet I have successfully managed to book tatkal tickets from irctc website, and I do it regularly for my personal use. Here is how I do it:

  • I always use Mozilla Firefox as my internet web browser for booking tickets online. mozilla somehow communicates better, persists with the irctc.co.in server and gives very few timeout errors.
  • Please do not forget to install a very useful script from greasemonkey. the scrip is called 'auto refesh'.
  • Login to your account (now https://www.irctc.co.in/eticketing/loginHome.jsf) web account atleast 30 minutes before the tatkal booking opens. By the way takal booking open at 10:00AM so you should login preferably at 9:30AM.
  • When the first page opens do not type anything and keep your page refreshing at the regular intervals( within 3 minutes) if you have not installed auto refresh script.
  • You will notice that as the booking open time approaches your page takes longer to load after each refresh. Please ensure your last refresh at 10:00 AM is around 9:58 or 9:59AM.
  • When you notice that time in the bar as shown above is 10:00AM or more, process your booking accordingly. The faster the better, as you are competing with thousands others it is better to have a faster internet connection, good speed PC/Laptop and quick fingers to type faster.
  • You will also need an ID detail of the traveller to fill in so keep the details handy before you jump in.
All the best.

Agents IRCTC Login Booking Trick

IRCTC Login

With lots of agents and IRCTC Login problems people usually are unable to book tatkal tickets but agents who are not allowed to book tickets at the tatkal starting time get the tickets for you. Have you ever thought how do they do it? How they manage to book tickets? You will obviously say that its their daily work and they know the best and also have software which let them book fast. Well, I would agree with only one of your point that is their daily work but not the software. It is true that once a software worked and let some agents who paid for the software to book tatkal tickets before tatkal time but I R C T C has overcome this error and software trick. That software costs around Rs.70,000/- according to some newspaper I read.

Tricks that Agents do with IRCTC Login Fast and Book Tatkal Tickets

First you must know what they use! They use:
  • Mozilla Firefox - it is web browser like internet explorer and can be downloaded from here.
    firefox browser logo
  • Multiple IRCTC accounts / IDs, though this is illegal but they take the risk. I would not suggest you go for multiple accounts though because unlike agents you are concerned about your own ticket or your relatives and friends and your genuine account is sufficient for this purpose.
  • Two or three internet connections. Usually they have one broadband and one or two Net Setter (eg. reliance net or tata docomo dongle photon). For you a good broadband connection will be enough to book a ticket under tatkal scheme.
  • Auto form Fill Scripts (very important factor in booking a tatkall ticket nowadays). You can refer to my post which is in hindi for this purpose.
  • Sometimes using VPN - Virtual Private Network when very slow speed
So the next point is what is the procedure or steps needed to follow?
The steps are too easy and even you can do it easily if followed correctly.
I have written the steps that you needs to follow for tatkal booking. Follow the navigation on the right side of the page to read it. तत्काल टिकट कैसे बुक करें?

IRCTC Website of Indian Railways Experiences Low Bandwidth.

IRCTC website is getting slower day by day. It hangs, refuses to proceed and gives one liners like "service unavailable". The railway minister himself has accepted this in Rajya Sabha on December 14th 2012.
News:
Railway Minister P.K. Bansal has admitted in Rajya Sabha that on many instances the website, www.irctc.co.in for booking online railway tickets in India was experiencing slowdowns and server errors. Online reservation is being done through the website of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (I R C T C), a subsidiary of Indian Railways. Currently the organization has 58 iridium servers and all other technical infrastructure to cater to the needs of the public, however it fails to withstand the heavy load during peak hours in the morning and during holidays.

For availing online reservation one needs to register with the website and provide the personal details like name, address, valid mobile number, valid email and other contact information. Upon registration a welcome mail with username and password and an activation link to access the website will be sent to the applicant. A mobile verification code is also sent to the registered mobile number and the user needs to provide the code when activating the account. The payment options for booking the tickets include credit cards, debit cards, internet banking and cash cards. The passenger can look the PNR status at frequent intervals after booking the ticket. The amount paid for any wait listed ticket will be refunded back in case reservation is not available.

The website provides other information like tour packages, hotels, flights and offer tailor made tour packages to both Indians and foreigners. According to a recent Alexa review on the website, an average user spends around 10 minutes browsing the website and most of the visitors were Asians accessing the website either from home or from their workplace.

Although hundreds of passengers use the website for online booking, complaints regarding its slow speed and many other booking and cancellation issues are on rise day by day. It is argued that the authorities intentionally do not provide extra bandwidth to the website to help the outside agents. According to railways, a sudden surge in online traffic especially during the booking of Tatkal ticket creates trouble to the website.
